I was faffing about in my room over the weekend thinking about what I can blog about and I thought about all my favourite things at the moment… And they’re all purple.

So maybe some are just purple in packaging, but others are actually purple. I just bought a new dress for my best friend’s wedding next May (I’m so eager), the products I use in my hair, my fave nail polish at the moment and even my favourite pants!

You might not care, but I thought I would share them with you as they each bring joy to my life each day 🙂

  1. Cami Tie Waist Double Split Midi Dress – £40 – ASOS – This is the dress I’ve bought for my friend’s wedding. I know it’s super early, but I saw it, loved it and thought it’s likely it won’t be around when I’m looking for something next May. So now it hangs on the front of my wardrobe being all soft and lovely and making me excited daily!!
  2. KMS California FreeShape Quick Blow Dry – £11.20 – AllBeauty – I use this every single day on my hair. It’s a MIRACLE. It helps hair dry faster, maintain it’s shape once dried and also helps protect hair from heat and add a little extra conditioning to save your hair from damage. GOD SEND.
  3. Barry M Coconut Infusion in Surfboard – £4.99 – Boots/Superdrug – This is my favourite nail colour at the moment, it’s pinky, purpley, pastely and lovely. Plus it lasts for AGES on long and short nails and the coconut oil gives a little nourishment to your nails – win win!
  4. TIGI Bed Head Thickening and Volumizing Small Talk 3 in 1 – £7.75 – AllBeauty – This stuff is also magical! It makes hair feel thicker, look more volumised and also sleek. I don’t know how it does it, but I love it!
  5. Natrol Biotin 10,000mcg, Maximum Strength, 100 Tablets – £7.50 – Amazon – I am taking these supplements for my hair to make it stronger, thicker and healthier. I don’t usually believe in hair supplements and things like that but my hairdresser recommended these and I’ve been taking them for about 3 months now and I have to say my hair feels great! This seems to be all about my strive for thicker, better hair… haha.
  6. Silk & Lace Brazilian Knickers by Rosie for Autograph – £12.50 – Marks & Spencer – Ok so £12.50 is pretty expensive for one pair of pants, but I bought some black ones in the sale before and they are just the most comfortable things EVER and these ones were so pretty I couldn’t resist (plus I had a £5 voucher – thanks M&S credit card!). I love the Brazilian shape, it’s comfortable and sexy without being a constant wedgie. Doesn’t quite give me RHW’s bum though…
  7. Tangle Teezer Purple Dazzle Compact Styler Professional Detangling Brush – £12.50 – ASOS/Boots – More about hair! My Tangle Teezer is my life. If you don’t have one yet, believe the hype, you need one. And this one’s purple. Enough said.

Well there’s a little insight into my purple loves at the moment… Hope you enjoy!

I am all about getting down with a good skin care regime. I’ve never had awful skin, but it’s always been a bit spotty and blotchy and it’s a big fan of gifting me a whopping zit or ginormous lurker just before a big event. When you’re wearing make up every single day (except those lazy Sundays we all lay in wait for with no make up and puled up hair all day long – can I get an amen?!) it’s so super important to make sure you take extra good care of your skin. Plus we gotta get those selfies on fleek!

Recently my bestie Sarah has started working with a brand called NU Skin who, among many other things, offer some of my favourite skin care options on the market – zit-busting mud masks, wrinkle-banishing eye-cream and deeply-softening moisturisers to name but a few.

Nu Skin-logo-tagline-DTBY.png

I’ve sat down with Sarah to pick out the top 5 best skin care products on offer… They all produce amazing results and get you glowing before you even get to the make up stage! The best bit? I’ve got a cheeky discount code you can use when ordering with Sarah. Quote EMILYJANE10 to get 10% off your order.

Take a look at my picks below…

1 – Epoch Glacial Marine Mud Mask – £25
Favoured by TOWIE’s Fern McCann and Kirk Norcross as well as number 1 beauty Michelle Keegan, this mask is amazing at drawing out impurities, removing dead skin and nurturing skin. It’s full of minerals and goodness which our skin loves, including zinc, magnesium and silver! You just smooth it on in it’s dark grey form, then once it’s all dried to the lovely pale minty grey colour (about 15-20 mins) it’s time to wash it off. Use it a couple of times a week to draw out the toxins, then banish them! What I love about this mask is that it shows you how it’s working with oils visibly coming to the surface and being absorbed by the mask – I always end up with a very speckled nose as that’s where I have lots of blackheads and spots. Cry. I have to say though this really helps to make skin feel fresh, clean and happy! 🙂

2 – Polishing Peel Skin Refinisher – £30
Polishing Peel actually works to resurface and polish yout skin to immediately deliver fresh, glowing complexion. This is what you would usually expect from a professional microdermabrasion treatment and this amazing product is clinically proven to be equivalent to this, but all from the comfort of your own home, for a fraction of the price, and at any time you’d like! With pumpkin enzymes and volcanic clay, like the Mud Mask, this product is full of natural ingredients that your skin loves! When I’ve used it I’ve found it to work just like a face mask, leaving skin instantly feeling fresher, younger and happier. However it takes a fraction of the time – less than 5 mins and it peels off to leave you with a whole new face! (Disclaimer, not an actual new face, you won’t be Beyoncé, but it will FEEL like you are!!).

3 – Moisture Restore – £40
So this is just a really flipping good, luxurious moisturiser. It’s great for dry, senstive or mature skin with pistachio oil to nourish, aloe vera to soothe and vitamin E (the BEST thing in the world for skin in my – and my mum’s – opinion. Mother knows best!) to condition. It’s great when it’s really cold and your skin feels cracked and sad, or when it’s really hot and you might have a spot of the face peels from sunbathing. For day to day it’s also a fab nighttime moisturiser – slather it on before bed and wake up with skin feeling younger, restored and so so moisturised!

4 – Epoch Blemish Treatment – £15
Bye bye blemishes! I’ve been using a very similar gel from Clinique, but when mine ran out I switched over to this one and it’s just as effective, but cheaper! It’s got a bunch of magical ingredients to clean pores, reduce redness, soothe skin and generally sort those spots out! This is great for people who have frequent blemishes and red spots – as you can see from the before and after pics (only 2 days!) it does a stellar job! I use it for larger pimples and find that they’re noticeably reduced, if not gone overnight! Use this after you’ve cleansed your skin for the day. Be aware that it can dry the skin out if used too much, so use sparingly and with a good moisturiser!

5 – Tru Face IdealEyes – £45
Ok, so I’ve not used this one personally, but HELLO MIRACLE WORKER! The images above show how the eyes are looking after just 2 weeks of use and it looks like the clock has just been turned back on this lovely ladies face! While I’m sure there’s a handy bit of good lighting involved, it’s clear that this cream has had a huge impact on lines and puffiness. It’s proven to brighten, reduce signs of fatigue, puffiness and fill lines. what’s not to love?! It works short term as seen in the images above over 2 weeks, but it also works in the long term too – eliminating the pigments that cause dark circles.

So there you have it, some amazing, proven to work products. While they’re a little more expensive than your drugstore brands like Nivea and Simple (the devil products – don’t use these!), they’re such a high calibre of product I would put them in the realm of Clinique and Clarins.

Remember, you can get 10% off your order by quoting EMILYJANE10. To order, get in touch with Sarah via her Facebook page here, and give it a like to learn more about all the other great products on offer! Or you can email her directly:

Now go get that glow gals!

Got your lipstick marks still on my coffee cup

As we move from the winter months into the spring, trends are changing.  But lipstick is something which stays on trend for a long time.  Whilst bright post-box-red will always be classic, my two other favourite trends for lip colour at the moment are…..

Deep dark and daring reds:

Gwyneth Paltrow :: Megan Fox :: Ashley Olson :: Rooney Mara :: Kate Winslet :: Anne Hathaway

Gwyneth Paltrow :: Megan Fox :: Ashley Olson :: Rooney Mara :: Kate Winslet :: Anne Hathaway

Wear with a simple winged eye or a smokey bronzed eyelid and lashings of mascara.  This type of lip makes a statement, so you don’t need to go overboard with the eye make up too, or the phrase drag queen might be batted around a little.  I like to match the strong lip with a strong brow to make a real statement… And a Megan Fox style pout won’t hurt either!!  Here are some gorgeous colours to try, there’s something for all budgets…

dark lips1. 195 Raspberry – Maybelline Superstay24 DualEnded Lip Color* – £8.99.  2. MAC Red – M-A-C Lipstick – £14.00.  3. 542 Cherry Pie – Maybelline Superstay24 DualEnded Lip Color* – £8.99.  4. Queen of Hearts – Collection 2000 Lasting Colour Lipstick – £2.99.  5. Red Devil – SEVENTEEN Supreme Shine Lipstick – £4.99.

*This stuff really works, it stays on for ages and doesn’t fade or flake.  Quite hard to take off when you’ve got a few wines inside you though!

Bright, bold and beautiful pinks:

Emma Stone :: Kat Graham :: Lea Michele :: Selena Gomez :: Kelly Osborn

Emma Stone :: Kat Graham :: Lea Michele :: Selena Gomez :: Kelly Osborn

While pink isn’t everyone’s favourite, you can’t get more girly or feminine.  With pink lips this season, brighter is better.  Don’t go for anything to cotton candy coloured or you will look like a bad barbie/gypsy bride.  Think bold and bright like Emma Stone.  Again this lip should be teamed with a simple eye, and beautiful highlighted cheekbones (I like high beam by benefit).  Here are my top five faves…

pink lips

1. Peach Pop – Clinique High Impact Lip Colour SPF 15 – £16.00.  2. 020 – Rimmel: Kate Lasting Finish Lipstick – £5.49.  3. Candy Yum-Yum – M-A-C Lipstick – £14.00.  4. Fuschia Flash – Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Lipstick Collection – £7.19.  5. Raspberry Glace – Clinique Different Lipstick – £16.00.

Have fun making a statement with your lips,

Celebrity Hair Trends 2011: All the colours of the [pastel] rainbow

This season the on-trend hair colour has gone from being Rhianna-Red to pastel pinks, blues, purples and silver.

Let me be the first to say that it’s gross, I personally don’t like it.  But you can’t deny that it is everywhere.  I do think that it really suits some people, for example Ellie Goulding, and if I was brave enough I would try it out for a while too.  But on some it just looks silly (cough cough Katy Perry – at first it was exciting and new, but now her roots look unkempt and ugly).  I think we all know where this started…

I don’t think anyone told these people though that this was a mistake, even Frenchie herself admitted it.  I mean, she dropped out of beauty school because of this hair colour!! Ok, the modern take on it is a little more washed out and almost a blonde-pink, but ultimately, it’s still pink.  I like the look on Fearne Cotton and Ellie Goulding (below) because they have the edge with their style and fashion to pull it off, but I really don’t think it looks right on celebs like Dianna Agron and Rachel McAdams, their clean cut image just doesn’t match pink hair.

Ellie Goulding - Fearne Cotton - Dianna Agron - Rachel McAdams

The look has also been sported by several reality show stars recently (see below), I think that Amelia Lily (The X-Factor) can work the look.  However Emily Scott (I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here) looks silly, and looked much better with long, caramel blonde hair like she had before.  Anastasia (Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model) looked stupid at first, but as the colour faded more, the more it grew on me, she had such a beautiful face that I didn’t mind so much.

Amelia Lily - Emily Scott - Anastasia Bogatirjova

Probably the person most famous for having pink hair in La-La land (other than Pink herself) is Katy Perry.  What started out as a startling change, but actually looked quite nice on her – with such a stunning face she can pull off anything – went to being bad, and its all down to roots.  Had the colour been maintained it would have continued to impress, however it didn’t.  Right now I’m thinking that someone needs to get Katy a ginger ale, because her pink hair is currently an epic fail.

Katy Perry's pink hair - the good, the bad and the ugly

Ellie Goulding and others have also opted for other pastely colours other than pink.  The favourites are blue, purple and silvery white.  Going grey before your time is apparently in, according to the likes of Pink (below), Pixie Geldof, Kelly Osbourne and Kate Moss (apparently hers was meant to go blue but the colour didn’t set so turned out silvery white).  I personally think that grey hair should be saved for the pensioners, but I do like the look on Ellie – she can basically do no wrong in my eyes – because I feel that it just looks more believable on her.  Like she chose it rather than decided to do it for attention or a movie role – which is what I’m hoping was the reasoning behind Kate Bosworth’s blue dip-dye monstrosity below.

Kate Bosworth - Ellie Goulding - Pink - Kate Moss

I think that this look can be adopted while still keeping your hair looking healthy and beautiful, also in a more temporary fashion.  Obviously it works best with blonde hair, but I love the tipped look – like this image (supposedly) of Lauren Conrad below, her hair still looks healthy and lucious, while also incorporating a rainbow of colours.  It also incorporates the dip-dye look with a new twist.

So, I won’t be going pink anytime soon, but if you’re planning to then just make sure it is a good match for your complexion and that you’re prepared for the up-keep it entails, at least if you go for the dip-dye option, you can trim the ends off  with little effort after a month if you change your mind!

Celebrity hair trends: plaits and braids

The latest hair trend seen on the red carpets recently are plaits galore.  Whether it’s a traditional down-the-back plait, a to-the-side plait, a fishtail or a french plait around-the-head style, they’re a perfect way to bring a summery feel to autumn.  They never go out of fashion, it’s just knowing the right way to wear them for the season.

Plaits work for the day and the night time, they are a great alternative to a simple ponytail and look sexy falling over your shoulder or snaking down your back.  The beauty is that there is a style for everyone, whether your hair is long or short.

The key for this style is to always wear with waves, for a beachy, undone look. This works for long and short hair, with tendrils coming down around the face, it looks beautiful for daytime and evening wear.  If you’re going for this over-the-shoulder look then hair looks better in a side parting, usually on the opposite side to which the plait is falling.

Blake Lively - Diane Kruger - Tamsin Egerton

For a more clean cut, severe look, opt for a tight high ponytail with plaited hair, this will give a sexy tomb raider feel.  This look is great with long hair, meaning there is a long plait, if your hair is short then the plait will stick out and look silly.

Nicole Scherzinger - Blake Lively - Fergie

If you have shorter hair, then go for an around-the-head style plait, either across the forehead to hold your fringe back, or like Whitney Port below, french plait your hair back into a ponytail or bun.  This keep hair out of your eyes and creates an on-trend alternative to a normal ponytail.  If you don’t like having your hair all scraped back or tight to your head, then wear a looser plait like Karen Gillan below, which adds volume and texture to the hair.

Pixie Lott - Whitney Port - Karen Gillan

For fishtail braids, take a look at this tutorial below, from Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari.  I don’t personally like the look of the final outcome, it’s too low down and her hair is too straight, but the main method is easy to understand.

When I want to wear my hair down, but stay on trend, I love to french plait my fringe back, it’s perfect for a night out, it keeps your fringe off your face for when you’re dancing away and getting hot in a club, but also looks pretty and adds a little something extra.

Hope that gives you some insight into how to achieve the plaited look for yourself!  Try it out and let me know how you get on.
